Messenger.com is shutting down starting April 2026, and many website owners are wondering if this will affect their Messenger chat links. Read their announcement
If you remember, back in 2024 we shared an update about the removal of the Messenger Chat Plugin on websites. That change affected embedded Messenger chat widgets. This time, the update is different. The shutdown of Messenger.com does not mean Messenger itself is going away.
Here is what you need to know and what you should do next.
What Is Shutting Down?
Messenger.com, the standalone web version of Messenger, is being discontinued. However, Facebook Messenger itself is not shutting down. It remains available through Facebook and the Messenger mobile app under Meta Platforms.
In short, the platform continues to operate. Only the separate Messenger.com access point is being removed.
Do m.me Links Still Work?
Yes!
m.me links continue to work and can still be used to trigger Messenger conversations.
Example format:
https://m.me/happycloudphilippines
When someone clicks an m.me link, it opens the conversation in:
The Messenger mobile app
Facebook in browser
Messenger web inside Facebook
For most businesses, this means there is no major disruption, as long as you are using m.me links instead of direct Messenger.com URLs.
What Website Owners Should Check:
If you own a website, here is a quick checklist:
- Check if you are linking directly to Messenger.com anywhere on your website.
- Replace Messenger.com links with your official m.me link.
- Test all chat buttons on desktop and mobile.
- Review old blog posts or landing pages that may contain outdated Messenger links.
